Project Work

WatchTower

As its core function, the software monitored devices on the User's network and would alert the User should any threshold be approached or crossed, before any emergency state occurs. Using SNMP to expose the manageable data on these devices, WatchTower presented this data through a portal-based GUI.

Downtime and outages translate to lost revenue for the customer, and WatchTower enabled awareness of up-to-the minute status of the User's network and to react accordingly to situations that affect network health.

The Application

Built on Jetspeed Portal, WatchTower had a highly customizable, brand-able interface
Dual level navigation. The top links were for (some) custom content, the bottom tabs for app navigation.
The system browser displayed all the application capabilities in a tree structure.
The node browser let the User browse their network for devices either by name or by IP address.
Content area. Network status overviews display by default. This can display as a new window to show more data.
Inline help was available, as well as the ability to connect to Safari Books Online
Events Screen Node Detail Screen

Current Events Tab

The User can interact with the devices on his network directly from the home page.

On this screen the User can acknowledge events and remove them from the list without having to go deeply into the application.

Device Detail Page

The User can interact with the devices on his network directly from a detail page.

On this screen the User can acknowledge events and also have more information about that particular device throwing the event.

This is also an example of the content area being viewed as a pop-out page.

Events Screen Events Screen

Device Information

The User can look up detailed information about any device on his network.

On this screen the User gets very specific data about a device on his network, including the OS and any interfaces that are present in the device.

Discovery

The User can add and monitor more devices as his network grows.

Using the discovery screens, the User can add more devices for WatchTower to monitor.

Versions
WatchTower came in two flavors: the Enterprise version as shown here, a 'light' version that was distributed freely (called Rooftop).

Other Work

  • Conducted User interviews and surveys for pilot programs.
  • Created icons, buttons and other artifacts for the WatchTower application.
  • Designed reports and data visualizations.

Fingerprint Icons

Sample icons that the application used to display device OS or device type on the detail pages. These came in 16x16 and 32x32 sizes.

Data Visualization

WatchTower can expose data from any type of device, and this example shows traffic and other statistics of a VOIP network in a given period.
