Wanting to fight the disease that was ravaging their community, a group of friends joined together in 1990 to create a small retail shop, the proceeds from which they would give to local AIDS service organizations (ASOs). They occupied a little corner of the Names Project's storefront for the holiday season. Customers were thrilled--they were able to give support to the fight against AIDS by giving gifts to their friends and loved ones. And so began an enduring holiday tradition: "giving the gift that gives twice." (from the Under One Roof site)
I volunteered at Under One Roof in 1994, when they were still at their old location. I was going to school and working, but I wanted to donate time doing community service work and Under One Roof fit what I was looking for. I am pleased to join them again, providing my services in a new capacity. |
